Newton's Rovers CCBTU returned to their winning ways with a clutch 2-0 win over the Delta United Hurricanes in Vancouver Metro Soccer League premier action.

Playing in a rare Tuesday night encounter at Holly Park, the Rovers scored two goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half to snap a two game losing streak.

"We needed that win and it's great for us moving forward," said Rovers coach Ted Hans. "We have three more games before the (Christmas) break and after disappointing results in the last two weeks, it's good to have some momentum going again.

"The guys really stepped up for this game and we got the result we wanted."

Rovers' goalkeeper Chris Beck came up with a huge save on a first half breakaway to keep the game scoreless through halftime.

Five minutes after play resumed, the Rovers took the lead when Gibson Bardsley volleyed a pass from Sidd Atchukin into the Delta net.

Ten minutes later, Rizal Ganief added an insurance marker on a long breakaway set up by a pass from Sunny Bains.

- In other games, the defending provincial champion Surrey United Firefighters came up one goal short in a 3-2 loss to host Richmond Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Firemen pulled even in the 55th minute when substitute Joseph Martin danced through the Richmond defence before slipping a pass to captain Ryan Reynolds for an easy goal.

Richmond regained the lead minutes later on a hotly disputed goal. Undaunted, Martin and Reynolds reprised their performance with another goal that mirrored their first marker 10 minutes earlier.

Surrey was unable to hang on for the draw as Richmond tallied in the final two minutes of play to escape with all three available points in the standings.

- Newton's ICST Pegasus continue to drop down the standings after falling 4-1 to the Metro Ford Wolves.

Azad Palani scored the lone Pegasus marker on a rebound after Chetan Jhooty's hard shot careened off the goal post.

- In Metro Women's Soccer League premier play, nine-time provincial champion Surrey United dropped their first game of the season 1-0 to the North Shore Renegades in Cloverdale Sunday.
