Squandered opportunities unraveled an otherwise strong showing by Bayside Sharks in a 16-10 loss to Capilano in Canadian Direct Insurance premier league rugby action at South Surrey Athletic Park Saturday.
The loss leveled the Sharks' record at 1-1 after two weeks of play. Bayside coach David Benoit said Capilano provided a much stiffer test for the Sharks than Cowichan did in a one-sided romp one week previously.
"Last week we looked good because we were never under any pressure," Benoit said. "This was our first real exposure to pressure in a game situation and having to perform at a higher speed. We have two weeks until our next game and I'm hoping we'll be in better form then.
"It's just basic catching and passing that let us down, basic errors that robbed us of momentum."
By Benoit's count, the Sharks out-chanced the visitors 13-2 in the games but bobbled the ball on at least 20 occasions. To make matters worse, the Sharks were whistled for nine penalties in the first half alone.
"Capilano is well structured defensively and hard to score against but we were our own worst enemies," Benoit said. "It was a bad day at the office because in our first phase moves, we just didn't execute. Capilano has a good young team but this was a game that we definitely let get away from us. It was a frustrating game."
Prop Taylor Stogryn was named the man of the match for Bayside while Benoit singled out the strong play of winger Jesse Train in just his second start at premier level.
In CDI first division play, the Sharks fell 33-19 to Capilano despite a pair of tries from Zach Thorpe. Senirusi Rauge also scored a try for Bayside while Dan Dixon and Mike Pinfield each slotted home one conversion.
- Elsewhere, the Surrey Beavers headed south of the border where they dropped a narrow 22-18 decision to Seattle in B.C. Rugby Union first division play.
Flanker Paul Kelly scored Surrey's only try of the opening half to lift the Beavers to a 13-10 lead at the break.
Seattle took over in the second half with two tries, one of which was converted, before the Beavers closed out the scoring with a late unconverted effort by Bret Huber.
Beavers coach Kevin Taylor singled out backs Chris Black and Clay Ross and forwards Nick Halstrom and Aaron Dennoyer for their contributions against Seattle.
