Surrey Eagles let two points slip away on home ice

It was a good news, bad news kind of weekend for the Surrey Eagles.

On the bright side, the Birds of Prey did not lose either of their scheduled games in regulation. The bad news? The Eagles only collected two points from a pair of home games against two clubs mired at the lower end of the B.C. Hockey League standings.

Surrey blew a 3-1 first period lead and lost 5-4 in overtime to the Trail Smoke Eaters at South Surrey Arena Friday night before settling for a 4-4 tie with the Victoria Grizzlies Sunday despite outshooting the visitors by a margin of more than two to one.

Despite the mediocre results, the Eagles remain tied with Cowichan for second place in the BCHL's Coastal Conference standings, trailing front-running Powell River by four points. Surrey also has also played two less games than Cowichan and three fewer than Powell River.

"The bottom line is we got two points this weekend and points are crucial at this time of the year," said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. "Missing out on two points is also huge though. At the end of every season though, there are games where we get points we probably didn't deserve and other games where we deserved to win and we get nothing. It usually equals out over the course of the season so you can't dwell on it."

On Sunday afternoon the Victoria Grizzlies appeared to be an easy two points for the Eagles after falling 13-2 in Langley the previous night. Grizzlies goalie Nicholas Taylor personally atoned for the Langley debacle by thwarting the Eagles at every turn Sunday, stopping 51 shots including 11 in overtime to allow the Bears to escape with a 4-4 tie.

"It's tough to get too upset about that game because we did have 55 shots on goal," Erhart said. "They had five shots in total from the scoring area in front of our net and four of them went in. Every mistake we made, we paid for it. In the last 40 minutes we out shot them 36-8 and their goalie made at least five saves where it was, 'Are you kidding me?' That's just the way it goes sometimes."

Robert Lindores led the Eagles with a hat trick while Demico Hannoun tallied once.

On Friday night it was the Trail Smoke Eaters who crashed the Surrey party as they came from behind to earn the overtime win.

The Eagles raced out to a 3-1 lead in the first period only to have Trail push back with three unanswered goals of their own to take over the lead early in the third period. Alex Hagen scored late in regulation to force overtime only to have the Smoke Eaters counter with the game winner by Brandon Long in the extra session.

The loss spoiled a breakout performance by Hannoun, who netted his first BCHL hat trick against Trail.

The Eagles are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Langley to take on the Rivermen.
