Home field wasn't quite the advantage the athletes thought it might be at the 2012 B.C. Summer Games in Surrey last weekend.

Surrey and White Rock athletes were a part of the Zone 3 - Fraser Valley team for the games where they managed to finish second overall in the medal count. Zone 3 competitors managed to collect 94 medals over the four days of competition, including 34 golds, 32 silvers and 28 bronze.

North Delta athletes competed as part of Zone 4 - Fraser River/Delta and came in fourth overall with 37 medals, 11 of them gold.

Sports teams from Zone 3 finished the Summer Games in style Sunday, claiming gold medals in the finals for boys' beach volleyball, box lacrosse, field lacrosse and rugby as well as girls' basketball, rugby, soccer and softball. In two other gold medal games Sunday, Zone 3 teams settled for silver in girls' volleyball and boys' inline hockey.

Coquitlam's Chanell Botsis was honoured as the 2012 winner of the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence at the closing ceremonies. Botsis, 14, set a new games record for the girls' javelin with a winning toss of 43.06 metres. She also won gold in the discus and hammer throw events.
