Dinotown is coming to Cloverdale nearly two years after it closed from its original location east of Chilliwack.

Dinotown Live, a 90,000-square- foot outdoor attraction with live entertainment, activities, a safari and more, will run from June 28 to Sept. 3 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.

"People used to drive an hour and a half to go to Dinotown out of Bridal Falls," said Rob Ell, the mayor of Dinotown.

"This is like taking your kids to a 3D movie, except they get a live show, dinosaurs and giant, inflatable fun for the same price."

Originally opened in 1975 as Bedrock City based on The Flintstones, the park officially became Dinotown when it reopened in 1995. Dinotown shut down on Labour Day 2010 after Ell was diagnosed with a large brain tumour.

They sold the property, but even before his recovery, they searched for new locations.

"We started talking to the City of Surrey back before we closed," he said. The Ell family looked at Bear Creek

Park, Holland Park and Stanley Park as possible locations and eventually settled on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.

"It's a pop-up dinosaur theme park," he said. "This is the only one of its kind."

One of the park's main attractions is the Ninjasaur, an 85-foot slide standing 40 feet high.

The 30-minute live show, Dinomania, will run at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. everyday. When they're not onstage, characters like Dusty and Dexter will be walking around the park for handshakes, high fives and photographs.

Ell hopes that Dinotown can come back with locations throughout the Lower Mainland and is already negotiating with different cities. They're in talks for one in Drumheller, home

of the World's Largest Dinosaur, a fibreglass Tyrannosaurus rex standing 86 feet tall.

"There could be another one downtown, there could be one in Coquitlam," he said. "If this works as well as I think it's going to work, then we plan on building these all over."
