A Surrey man was killed Saturday night when the stolen car he was driving split in half after slamming into a lamp standard in Newton.

Police say the 27-year-old man and his passenger, a 49-year-old woman, were ejected from the 1996 Honda Accord.

He died at the scene, from massive head injuries, while she was taken to hospital with head injuries and broken ribs. Their names have not been released. The crash happened at about 10:30 p.m., at the intersection of 128th Street and 68th Avenue.

Police said the stolen car apparently blew threw a red light and was T-boned by a Chevy Equinox driven by a 50-year-old man. The Equinox driver and his passenger sustained minor injuries.

The Accord then continued on into the pole. The Accord had been reported stolen from Surrey.
