The incumbent Sikh Youth Slate won Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara temple executive elections by a landslide on Sunday, defeating its B.C. Moderate Sikh Society opponents by more than two to one.

The new executive will take over on Jan 1.

Incoming president Rajinder Singh Dhaliwal received 10,237 votes, while the other slate's president candidate, Jasminder Kaur Chhina, received 4,330 votes.

The Sikh Youth Slate was first elected in 2009. Its new term runs until 2015.

Sunday's vote appears to reinforce a new era at the Newton temple, whose membership largely supported the moderate slate for more than a decade prior to the Sikh Youth Slate taking over.

"We do really good, hard work," Dhaliwal told the Now.

Chief Returning Officer Ron Laufer said of 21,569 eligible voters, 14,900 temple members cast ballots at Princess Margaret Secondary school in Newton.

All told, 14,690 ballots were counted, 210 were spoiled and no votes were contested.
