A man charged in the Maple Batalia murder case has been granted bail following a hearing Friday at the B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.
Gursimar Bedi, 23, is facing charges of manslaughter with a firearm and being an accessory after the fact. He was granted bail following a decision by the court's judge.
Reasons for the judge's decision to grant bail are under a publication ban and Bedi will not be released immediately, rather, his bail is determinate upon further submissions by lawyers next week.
Along with Bedi, 21-year-old Gurjinder "Gary" Dhaliwal is being charged with first-degree murder.
On the RIP Maple Batalia Facebook page, a message posted read: "Very sad day for us ...Gursimar Bedi, charged in connection to the Maple Batalia homicide, appeared in court, granted bail on several conditions but will not be released right away..."
Before her death, Maple Batalia was an aspiring model and actress who had been attending Surrey's SFU Campus for health sciences. The 19-year-old was shot in the school's parkade Sept. 28, 2011 and later died of her injuries.
Both Bedi and Dhaliwal are set to appear in B.C. Provincial Court on Jan. 25 in Surrey.
