SURREY — Northview Golf & Country Club's Matt Palsenbarg was presented with the Jim Gibson Scholarship at a PGA of BC awards event Oct. 16 in Richmond.
Palsenbarg, who teaches at the Northview Golf Academy, was recognized for his volunteerism and dedication to furthering his education to benefit others. The $1,000 award, which honours the late Jim Gibson, a renowned volunteer in B.C. golf, is given annually to a PGA of BC member who gives back to the game.
Palsenbarg spent thousands of dollars of his own money to take educational courses in the United States and has brought back that knowledge to Northview, where he has helped hundreds of kids become better golfers and community members. Palsenbarg is leader of the PGA of BC's Professional Development Program, which features a $2,000 first-place prize for the PGA of BC professional who collects the most points in a variety of categories, from tournament appearances to volunteer time to education to serving on a board or committee.
Another big winner at the event was Rob Houlding, named Teacher of the Year. Houlding, who runs the Rob Houlding Golf Academy in Surrey and teaches at the Kings Links Golf Club in Delta, has taught such notable golfers as Nick Taylor, Adam Svensson, Jisoo Keel and Taylor Kim.
He was lauded by past PGA of BC president Derek Thornley as "one of the most distinguished teachers in Canada" who deserves recognition as an "expert teacher and as a leader in the business of teaching golf."
