SURREY – The city ninth annual Youth Fest is set to happen Saturday, Sept. 21 at Cloverdale Recreation Centre, from 3 p.m. to midnight.
It's a new, and possibly temporary, venue for the event, which was moved to Cloverdale this year in light of the reconstruction project at Guildford rec centre, the festival's usual home.
New to Youth Fest is a Battle of the Bands contest – five bands on stage starting at 4 p.m., including She Dreams in Colour, Nostalgia, Stolen, Ministry of Misfits and The Vidos. Contest judges are local musicians Tommy Alto, Jordan Carrier and Brad Graham.
From 3 to 8 p.m., the festival will feature BMX and skate demos, breakdance battles, an art zone, sumo wrestling suits, a barbecue, a learn-to-DJ booth and more than 40 youth-focused resource booths.
Food trucks and go-karts are also part of the event. A free teen dance will run from 9 p.m. to midnight, for those age 13 and over (ID required).
A free shuttle will transport teens to and from the festival, with pick-up and drop-off sites at all other rec centres in Surrey, plus Clayton Heights Secondary.
Cloverdale rec centre is located at 6188 176th St., Surrey. More details are online at www.surrey.ca/youthfest.
